Meet Our Fraternities!

A Brief History of Our Fraternities The Multicultural Greek Council at the University of Virginia is a vibrant and diverse organization that brings together Greek-letter organizations from various national associations such as the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO), the National APIDA Panhellenic Association (NAPA), the National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC), and the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), as well as independent and local organizations. Learn more about the different fraternities that have made an impact on grounds down below. 1. La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. (NALFO) The Alpha Epsilon chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc. was the first fraternity within our council to be established on grounds in 1999. Alongside, the Iota chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the Sigma chapter of alpha Kappa Delta Phi International Sorority, Inc., they founded the Fraternity Sorority Council which would later be renamed to its current name the Multicultural Greek Council. They were founded nationally on February 19, 1982, and their main philanthropy is the P.A.T.H.E. Initiative (Providing Access To Higher Education). It historically has frequently occupied West Lawn Room 33 and is a member of NALFO. 2. Phi Society (Independent) [Former Member Organization] The Virginia Beta chapter of the Phi Society was the second fraternity on grounds to join the Multicultural Greek Council (where it joined with the name Phi Delta Alpha Fraternity). It was originally established at the University of Virginia on November 18, 1873, as the first Virginia Beta chapter of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity which was founded nationally on December 26, 1848. In 2000, after a brief stint as an independent fraternity, the fraternity joined the Multicultural Greek Council where it was a member organization until 2003 when it decided to transfer to the Inter-Fraternity Council at the University of Virginia. Its main philanthropy is The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the organization is not a part of any national conference or council. 3. Lambda Phi Epsilon International Fraternity, Inc. (NAPA and NIC) The Alpha Tau chapter of Lambda Phi Epsilon International Fraternity, Inc. was the third fraternity to join the Multicultural Greek Council in 2002. They were founded nationally on February 25, 1981. Their main philanthropy is the National Marrow Donor Program. The fraternity is residential and is a member of both NAPA and the NIC. 4. Delta Lambda Phi Social Fraternity (NIC) The UVA colony of Delta Lambda Phi Social Fraternity was the fourth fraternity to join the Multicultural Greek Council in 2004. Before becoming a local colony of Delta Lambda Phi Social Fraternity, it was a student organization on grounds known as Out On Rugby which advocated for the widespread social inclusion of those within the LGBTQ+ community at the university. The national fraternity was founded on October 15, 1986. It is a member of NIC and its main philanthropy is the Delphi Foundation. 5. Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau Fraternity, Inc. (Independent) The Kappa chapter of Delphic of Gamma Sigma Tau Fraternity, Inc. was the fifth fraternity to join the Multicultural Greek Council in 2009. The fraternity was founded nationally on October 13, 1871 (under its original name of the Delphic Society) and its main philanthropy is global education and suicide prevention. It is residential and is not a part of any national conference or council.
