Meet Our Sororities!

A Brief History of Our Sororities The Multicultural Greek Council at the University of Virginia is a vibrant and diverse organization that brings together Greek-letter organizations from various national associations such as the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO), the National APIDA Panhellenic Association (NAPA), the National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC), and the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), as well as independent and local organizations. Learn more about the different sororities that have made an impact on grounds down below. 1. Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. (NALFO) The Iota chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was the first sorority within our council to be established on grounds in 1998. Alongside, the Sigma chapter of alpha Kappa Delta Phi International Sorority, Inc. and the Alpha Epsilon chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., they founded the Fraternity Sorority Council which would later be renamed to its current name the Multicultural Greek Council. They were founded nationally on March 15, 1989, and their main philanthropy is raising awareness of violence against women. It is a member of NALFO and the oldest established member organization of the Multicultural Greek Council at the University of Virginia. 2. alpha Kappa Delta Phi International Sorority, Inc. (NAPA) The Sigma chapter of alpha Kappa Delta Phi International Sorority, Inc. was the second sorority within our council to be established on grounds in 1999. Alongside, Iota chapter of Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the Alpha Epsilon chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., they founded the Fraternity Sorority Council which would later be renamed to its current name the Multicultural Greek Council. They were founded nationally on February 7, 1990, and their main philanthropy is breast cancer awareness. It is a member of NAPA. 3. Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. (formerly NALFO) The Gamma Alpha chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc was the third sorority to join the Multicultural Greek Council in 2001. They were founded nationally on December 1, 1975. Their main philanthropy is working with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The sorority is the oldest Latina sorority in the nation and is a former member of NALFO. 4. Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. (NAPA) The Lambda chapter of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. was the fourth sorority to join the Multicultural Greek Council in 2001. They were founded nationally on March 23, 1994. Their main philanthropy is working to combat violence against women. The sorority is a member of NAPA. 5. Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. (NMGC) The Pi chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was the fifth sorority to join the Multicultural Greek Council in 2002. They were founded nationally on April 11, 1997. Their main philanthropy is the Girl Up program. The sorority is a member of NMGC.


6. Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. (NALFO)

The Alpha Rho chapter of Sigma Lambda Upsilon/Señoritas Latinas Unidas Sorority, Inc. was the sixth sorority to join the Multicultural Greek Council in 2013. They were founded nationally on December 1, 1987. Their main philanthropy is the promotion of literacy in accordance with the standards set by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The sorority is a member of NALFO.
